Push the screws into a sheet of polystyrene foam, leaving the heads exposed. Use a toothbrush to remove dirt, grease or paint from the screws. Sand the hinges and the screw heads, using a medium-grit sanding pad. Remove the sanding dust with a clean, damp cloth. Lay the hinges on a large piece of cardboard or a clean work table in a ventilated area.

Leave enough space between each hinge to spray the edges. Push the screws into a clean sheet of polystyrene foam. The advantage of removing hardware versus painting it in place- is that it leaves the door open to easily change it out in the future! Once you paint over in place- it creates a paint seam that will be void of paint beneath.

Also- it will be difficult to remove the hardware later if you change your mind about it. As for painting the hinges though and hardware …. Often- on kitchen cabinets- we will paint the hinges- as so to make them visually disappear.
